Pupils did handpainting to explore the links between Art and Science. They used a mixture of paints : oil, powder, poster and acrylic to form an image and then speculated on what was happening.
The pupils devised the following model for forming an image with paint :
Pigments are carried by a liquid. They are coloured chemicals.
They must have something to stick them to the paper, the binding medium.
The liquid evaporates leaving the pigment behind.
Oil forms a protective layer over the pigment.
