What is Extended Services across the Teesdale Cluster?

Extended Services is a country-wide, government initiative all about supporting children and families. It is part of the Every Child Matters Agenda and the long term vision of schools being at the heart of the community providing access to services and activities that often extend beyond the school day. Extended Services works in partnership with other schools and the public, private and community sectors to offer access to a range of activities and services that meet the needs of pupils, their families and the wider community. By September 2010, the nine schools across the Teesdale Cluster aim to provide access to: high quality childcare, a varied menu of after school activities, community access – to ICT, sports and arts facilities including family and adult learning, support for parents and swift and easy referral to a range of specialist support services. The nine schools within the Teesdale Cluster are: Bowes Hutchinson, Cotherstone, Forest-of-Teesdale, Green Lane, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Montalbo, St. Mary’s and Startforth Morritt primary schools and Teesdale School Science College and Sixth Form Centre.  Information about access to childcare provision and activities after school or during the holidays is available from the schools or via the Extended Services Coordinator. In addition, the Teesdale Cluster schools have a Parent Support Advisor and a Transition Advisor to help parents and pupils with any issues requiring specialist advice.  To help pupils and parents make the transition from primary to secondary stage, Extended Services work together with schools and partners to provide the ‘Moving Up Summer Scheme’ during the summer holiday. All Year 6 pupils at the Cluster primary schools are invited to participate in the holiday scheme which features performance and visual arts workshops, sports, outdoor activities including a day trip to Hamsterley Forest for orienteering and den-building and a day at the Teesdale Leisure Centre for swimming, climbing wall and trampoline activities. On the final day of the scheme there is a celebration event for parents and siblings to find out what participants have achieved throughout the scheme. The last two schemes were hugely beneficial with children and parents agreeing that the transition from primary to secondary is made so much easier for all those who take part.
