‘A’ Level Spanish
Students are required to have obtained GCSE Spanish at Grade C or above. The aims of the course are:
To deepen and improve the student’s knowledge and command of the Spanish language and to increase the student’s ability to communicate in and understand Spanish in spoken and written form.
To provide an awareness of Spanish culture through study of selected articles.
Students wishing to continue Spanish after GCSE level need to have a good command of English, a liking and aptitude for language and an interest in reading. First and foremost, though, they should wish to widen their knowledge of Spanish speaking cultures.
A new course has been introduced designed to follow on more suitably from the kind of work done at GCSE level. The accent is on communicative skills and oral proficiency—in other words, actually using the language in a purposeful and realistic way. For A2 there is a strong coursework element.
AS Level Spanish
AS Level Spanish may be followed by those students wishing to do so. This course may well appeal to students involved in ‘A’ level study who have studied languages to GCSE level and wish to continue with them in the Sixth Form.
Skills
They are essentially the same as for GCSE but you will also need some factual knowledge of Spanish speaking countries. You will need to do some of your own research.
