Mewhort Scholarships Awarded

Six Sixth Form students from Teesdale School have been awarded scholarships to help them through University. The successful students were selected by the trustees of the Mewhort Trust which was set up in the memory of the late Mrs Phyllis Mewhort of Barnard Castle.

The generous awards have been made by the trustees on the basis of academic achievement and contribution to both the school and the local community.

A single ‘excellence’ award of £1500 per year for each of the three years of a degree course was awarded to Kathryn Ipsen of Barnard Castle who has just started at Leeds University where she is studying History & French.

A further five awards of £1000 per annum were made to Kane Mitchell who is studying Design Media Technology at Nottingham Trent, Naomi Philbrick doing English at Stirling, Emma Maine doing Maths at Newcastle, Jenny Smith studying Geography at Lancaster and Katherine Holder studying Graphic Design & Marketing at Chester.

Commenting on the awards, Headteacher Paul Harrison said: ‘Sixth Formers at Teesdale are uniquely privileged to have these scholarships. I am delighted the trustees felt able to award six scholarships this year in recognition of the quality of the candidates.

Recent press articles have highlighted the huge amount of debt facing students on graduation. I’m sure our students are very grateful for the help that these scholarships gives them.’
